Other Families release: house.xct Saturday, August 6th

You enter the HOUSE via its ‘Front Steps,’ and are immediately confronted by the choice of a few doors. You look in the ‘Mailbox’ to find it locked. A voice addressing you calls you Jack....

Through the Tunnel of Love you enter the Northeastern Hall,
which leads further to the Church and Mess Hall.
In the Mess Hall you meet Canadian musician Grimes,
and also find a key to the Kitchen. In the Kitchen you find the door to the Servant’s Passageway,
and with the key, enter. Now inside this tunnel beneath the House you witness a procession of ghosts,
who you realize are former servants of this estate.
You watch as a red-haired child accompanying these servants falls through a trap-door
that opens in the earth of the tunnel, and his parents vainly try to retrieve him.
This scene dissipates, and in the way ghost events do,
repeats again immediately behind you, further back in the passage...

TINDERBOX

How long did the collection of materials for the house project take?

OTHER FAMILIES

Some of it we've been working on since before the last album was out!
Some of it, since the beginning of the band. Some of it, on solo careers before this band.
A decade, at least.

TINDERBOX

Ten years is a long time. Many bands are born and die in that kind of time.
What deaths or hauntings have the members of your group experienced recently?

OTHER FAMILIES

Roadkill So Far:

One vulture. Michigan.
A dozen armadillos plus. Missourri.
Raccoon. Illinois.
Small unknown (10).
Med. unknown (11).
One dog.
One hundred thousand junebugs, on the windshield.

( from RED BOOK, Other Families tour journal, in "The Library.")

Is Other Families pre- or post-apocalyptic music?

OTHER FAMILIES

 Post-our-apocalypse-
pre-the-new-apocalypse that's coming after this next Ice Age.
Ever check out Giorgio Agamben?

TINDERBOX

No. ( an Italian philosopher best known for his work investigating the concepts of the state of exception, form-of-life and homo sacer. The concept of biopolitics informs many of his writings.)

What are some important influences that may not be immediately recognized in your music?

OTHER FAMILIES

 Good one! Not immediately recognized?
Well we're not sure what music you'd hear as immediate influence.
The real stuff that doesn't get noticed is the non-musical influences.
Video games and food, glitches in reality and technology.
Circuit bending, spending so much time in a museum you literally can't look at any more art.
Moments of humour that can't be reproduced,
anything that nurtures an idea of alternative creativity and experimentation.

TINDERBOX

Glitches in reality? Like Humour? Ghosts?
Do you ever dream about band practice?

OTHER FAMILIES

 Band practice is a dream.

What do independent artists in Toronto need
to advance their work and connect with an audience?

OTHER FAMILIES

Wouldn't it be sweet if Toronto had like, 2.8 million less people in it?
There's so many artists, so many audience members,
and so much to do that everyone's a flake these days.
There's no magic word to make people come out
when they say they'll come out, if there was we would use it.
I guess just be yourself and she'll eventually appreciate you.

TINDERBOX

In the Summoning Room you witness Other Families contact the spirit of their late bandmate.
The messages Zach attempts to pass them about the afterlife
are corrupted by the voices of several other of the House’s ghosts,
also crowding into the conversation. Impatient, you ask Zach the key to the High Tower,
and he gives it to you. You are told to return to the First Floor Library
and enter the series of combinations it provides....

Incredible. There must be 25 servants travelling ahead of you
in a loose triple file filling the incandescent width of the tunnel.
Some wear blue dresses and bonnets their waists laced by white apron ties....

But now in the middle a sudden drooping.
The next sound is as if the sound is sucked out,
a leaky tap straight through the eye of the drain or a spiral napkin down through metal plate ring.
That silence snaps a heavy clasp and hinge on the sounding board of wood,
which reaches you, another snap and pop as the hinge activates,
freefalling then creaking then caught, two slowing knocks of the wood against a stone surface,
then more slowing creaks of the suffering hinge. The woman with the candle screams,
and this truly touches you. Another sheer moment of hesitation,
stretched by the now sequenced sound of the swingcreakcumgratecreak of the hinge.
Then panic through the force of servants caged now in the passage avenue,
shuddering from that circle as they press against the wall.
The man with shocking red hair has his face to the ground by the knees of the woman.
He is reaching his arm through the floor and calling his son.
The servants are climbing the walls of the passage, and then disappear.
You hear voices behind you, feel a warm glow at your back.
